The Original Velatis all-natural caramel company started in Richmond in 1866, moved to Washington, D.C., then returned to the Richmond area in 2002. The company’s newest flavor – in either chewy or sugary caramel form – is black-cherry-brandy, the 2004 Best New Food at the Virginia Food and Beverage Expo. Company CEO William Servais says, “The black-cherry-brandy caramel came about because I love chocolate-covered cherries.” Our staff particularly loved the chewy vanilla caramels with cashews.
